BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday proposed four guiding principles to advance a resolution to the Palestinian question, a central issue in the Middle East, during talks with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Beijing. The meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People, underscored China’s consistent advocacy for a just and lasting settlement to the decades-long conflict.
Xi emphasized that the first principle involves upholding a political settlement as the pathway to resolving the Palestinian question. He reiterated China’s support for the two-state solution, describing it as “the right direction” and stressed the need to resume peace talks between Palestine and Israel. “Efforts should be made to restart peace talks between Palestine and Israel, with a view to establishing an independent Palestinian state at an early date,” he said. This approach, Xi noted, aligns with the international community’s longstanding consensus and is essential for achieving durable peace in the region.
The second principle centers on the concept of “Palestinians governing Palestine” in the context of administrative and reconstruction efforts. Xi highlighted the importance of empowering Palestinian authorities to manage the West Bank and lead post-war reconstruction in Gaza. This principle, he explained, reflects the need for local ownership and self-governance to address the underlying challenges of governance and development in Palestinian territories.
Humanitarian principles formed the third pillar of Xi’s proposal. He called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities in protecting civilian safety and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid. “The international community, and the UN Security Council in particular, should shoulder its responsibility effectively to protect civilian safety, ensure the flow of humanitarian assistance, and put an end to humanitarian disasters,” he stated. This emphasis on humanitarian obligations underscores the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of affected populations and create conditions conducive to peace.
The fourth principle revolves around upholding fairness and justice through adherence to international law.
