On August 31, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During the meeting, Xi announced that China is prepared to work with Mongolia to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and advance together along their respective paths of modernization.
Xi highlighted the close geographic ties between the two countries, noting that China and Mongolia share mountains and rivers. China will continue to prioritize China‑Mongolia ties within its neighborhood diplomacy, and will work with Mongolia to consolidate strategic trust, deepen cooperation, and strengthen people‑to‑people connectivity, thereby injecting greater vitality into the comprehensive strategic partnership and building a China‑Mongolia community with a shared future.
Both sides should strengthen the political foundation of their relations, respect each other’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, Xi added.
Xi also expressed China’s willingness to align development strategies with Mongolia, promote traditional cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy and mineral resources, and explore new areas such as green minerals, artificial intelligence and the digital economy. China hopes that Mongolia will effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, and urges both sides to coordinate and cooperate in multilateral affairs while jointly addressing global challenges.
In response, President Khurelsukh reiterated that Mongolia and China are friendly neighbors who have always respected and trusted each other and maintained good‑neighborly relations, irrespective of changes in the international situation. He said that China’s development has created major opportunities for neighboring countries and is driving development across Asia and the world.
Mongolia has made deepening friendly cooperation with China a top priority of its foreign policy. The country is ready to continue consolidating political mutual trust with China, enhance cooperation in trade and investment, industry, agriculture, mining and the green economy, and elevate bilateral relations to new heights.
Khurelsukh affirmed that Mongolia firmly adheres to the one‑China principle and recognizes that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. He also stated that issues related to Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong are China’s internal affairs.
He praised the four major global initiatives proposed by Xi and the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity as significant for maintaining world peace and security, promoting sustainable development and addressing global challenges. Mongolia is ready to work with China to jointly implement these initiatives.
